RESERVES GO TOP AFTER WIN AT LAUNTON
By Mark Wilkins
The reserves continued their 100% record with an 8-2 win at Launton to go top with games in hand.
Marston Saints Reserve Team travelled to Launton Sports FC on Saturday looking to maintain their 100% winning record. They already had a strong settled squad but were boosted by the introduction of Josh West who was returning from injury.
The game started with a flurry, and there were three goals in the first ten minutes. Launton scored first, but the Saints quickly responded with two goals of their own. Carl Bloomfield scored his first of the afternoon followed quickly by an unfortunate own goal. The game then settled in to a contrast of styles. Launton who had a big strong attack relied on the long ball to put the Saints defence under pressure, and the Saints who relied on their slick football passing game, going forward. The defence were able to cope well with the Launton tactic and were marshalled well at the back with all four of the defenders Brodie Edmunds, Tyrone Brackett, Callum Boomfield and Kyle Downie standing strong and resolute. It was only a matter of time before the Saints midfield took complete control, and by the time we had reached half time the Saints had added four more goals. The stand out goal was from Jae Sharkey who, latched on to a kick out by the goalkeeper just inside the Launton half, and with the goalkeeper being off his line he lobbed him and the ball found it’s way into the back of the net.
The second half settled down in to a pattern similar to that of the first, but Marston had complete control of the game and were able to add two more. All the team had played well and Rio Maldini-Cadle who was playing on the left side of midfield scored after good team work down the left hand side. Launton scored a late consolation but the game finished 8-2 and Marston moved to top of the league and have two games in hand on all their opponents. The goal scorers were as follows: Carl Bloomfield (3), Jae Sharkey (2), Kyle Downie and Rio Maldini Cadle. After the game we returned to Launton Sports Club and we thank them for their hospitality.
